Lady Pirates push past Winston-Salem State 3-2

Winston-Salem, N.C. – The Hampton University Lady Pirate volleyball team won a close one  at Whitaker Gymnasium in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Thursday evening as they defeated the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams by the score of 3-2 (23-30, 30-20, 32-30, 26-30, 15-11) in a match that took two hours and 13 minutes to complete.



The Lady Rams earned a 30-23 victory in game one of the match as WSSU looked to control the match in the early-going.


However, the Lady Pirates earned wins in the second and third games before WSSU evened the match at two games each following a 30-26 win in the match’s fourth game.



Nevertheless the Lady Pirates secured the match victory following a 15-11 win in the fifth, and deciding game.

Hampton was led by senior Chavanca Hoskins (Dallas, Texas/ Lincoln HS) who tallied a match-high 21 kills and nine digs, one dig shy of picking up her sixth consecutive double-double. She was joined by sophomore Morgan Williams (Duncanville, Texas/ Duncanville HS) who posted 20 kills , 11 digs and four service aces in the win. Sophomore setter Jasmin Elder (Upper Marlboro, Md./ Gwynn HS) handed out a game-high 58 assists while junior Ebonie Vincent (Temecula, Fla./ UC-Riverside) turned in a 13 kills and four blocks in the winning effort.  On the defensive end sophomore Alyssa Jackson (Fort Wayne, Ind./ Snider HS) produced a match-high 19 digs.


WSSU was led by Jasmine Watkins who produced  13-kill performance in the loss. Watkins was joined in double-figures by Brandi Beane who tallied 10 kills in the effort.



The win improves HU to 5-8 (0-0 MEAC) on the season while the Lady Rams drop the  to 2-21.


Hampton returns to action tomorrow, October 6, at Noon to match-up against North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C.
